Four-Run First Seals Victory For Gray

STARKVILLE. Miss. -Â Gray relied on a four-run first inning and stellar pitching to top Maroon, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon in Mississippi State's 17th fall scrimmage at Dudy Noble Field.
Juniors Ryan Gridley and Brent Rooker combined to drive in all four runs in the scrimmage.
Gray got all of the insurance it needed with a four-run top of the first inning. Gridley got a one-out single through the right side, followed almost immediately by a 371-foot home run to left field by Rooker to drive in Gridley.
In the same inning, Gridley hit a two-out, two-RBI double to the wall in left field to drive in sophomore Cole Gordon and junior Tanner Poole.
Gray pitching combined to allow just two hits in the outing, including a perfect inning of relief from junior Andrew Mahoney to close out the contest.
After allowing four runs on five hits over the first three innings, Maroon pitching settled down to not allow another hit the rest of the game.
State will close its fall season with the Maroon and White World Series, a best-of-three series of teams that will be assembled by the Diamond Dawgs through a player draft. Admission is free to all fall scrimmages and future first pitch times will be announced on social media.
