Gray Rallies To 5-2 Win In Fourth Fall Scrimmage
October 19, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - The bottom four spots in the Gray lineup combined for five hits, five runs scored and four RBI on the way to a 5-2 comeback victory in the fourth fall scrimmage for Mississippi State at Dudy Noble Field, Wednesday.
Coming off a win on Sunday, Gray did not take long to jump out front as a single off the bat of sophomore Luke Alexander scored classmate Hunter Stovall from second top open the scoring. The visitors would plate one more run in the frame as a wild pitch brought across junior Brent Rooker to give Gray a 2-0 lead in the first.
Freshman Hagan Severance helped Maroon draw closer in the third as he ledoff with a double down the left field line. A flyout to right, followed by a groundout to short brought him across to give Maroon its first run of the game and cut the score to 2-1.
In the top of the fifth, junior transfer Hayden Marze stepped to the plate with a runner on and drove a pitch 406 feet for a two-run home run that gave Gray its first lead of the day, 3-2.
With runners on second and third, sophomore transfer Elijah MacNamee delivered a clutch base hit for Gray that extended their lead to 5-2 in the top of the sixth.
The two sides combined to throw 11 pitchers as sophomore transfer Spencer Price pitched a perfect final inning with two strikeouts to secure the victory for Gray.
The next scrimmage is set Friday at 4 p.m. from Dudy Noble Field with all fall scrimmages free and open to the public.
