October 23, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. -Â Gray scored early and often in its 7-3 victory against Maroon in the seventh scrimmage of the fall baseball slate, with seven of nine batters earning a hit for Gray.
Sophomore Luke Alexander was one of several playmakers for Gray, going 2-for-3 with three runs driven in. Over four scrimmages in the past week, Alexander went 5-for-11 with 5 RBI.
Gray's scoring barrage began in the top of the first inning, with sophomore Jake Mangum reaching on a leadoff walk, stealing second and being driven in on a single by Alexander. Alexander and redshirt freshman Tanner Poole were both driven in on a two-run single by sophomore Elih Marrero to give Gray an early 3-0 lead.
Maroon picked up its first run of the contest on a single by sophomore Cole Gordon that drove in redshirt freshman Brant Blaylock, who led off the inning with a single. Gray responded with another run in the top of the second, as Poole hit an RBI double in the left-center field gap to score sophomore Hunter Stovall.
Maroon's second run came in the bottom of the second when senior Josh Lovelady crossed home plate on a throwing error.
Gray would score a trio of insurance runs in the top of the fourth to cap off its scoring for the day. Alexander's two-run double drove in both Stovall and Poole, leaving Alexander to be driven in by senior Cody Brown.
Freshman Hagan Severance drove in Lovelady to give Gray another run, but the rally was stopped short with senior Blake Smith getting a strikeout to end the ballgame.
Junior Ryan Rigby came on in relief of freshman Graham Ashcraft and pitching an inning of scoreless relief, striking out two batters. Freshman Denver McQuary pitched 1.2 scoreless innings for Maroon, allowing just two hits and striking out one in relief of the starter, sophomore Kale Breaux.
