October 20, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. -Â Through dominance in both pitching and hitting, Maroon earned its second win of the fall slate in a five-inning 8-1 blowout of Gray.
Â
Sophomores Konnor Pilkington and Hunter Stovall led Maroon, while errors plagued Gray.
Â
Maroon started the offensive barrage immediately in the bottom of the first inning. Stovall came in from second on a throwing error by Reed Smith. An inning later, Maroon stretched the lead to 3-0 as Dustin Skelton singled to left field, then to 4-0 on another single to left by senior Josh Lovelady.
Â
Sophomore Luke Alexander's RBI groundout brought in junior Hunter Vansau from third in the top of the fourth, representing Gray's only run.
Â
In the bottom half, Maroon ran away with the lead. Junior Brent Rooker drove a double to the wall in deep right centerfield to score two more runs. Sophomore Elijah MacNamee brought home Rooker and Skelton, who was hit by a pitch, and Maroon had an 8-1 lead going into the fifth and final inning.
Â
Junior Trey Jolly came in to close for Maroon and induced three groundouts to retire the side. A total of seven pitchers saw action in the four-and-a-half innings of play.
Â
Both Pilkington and fellow sophomore Ryan Cyr pitched two innings in their starts for Maroon and Gray, respectively. Pilkington allowed no runs on two hits and struck out four, while Cyr allowed an unearned run, a hit and a walk while striking out one.
The Diamond Dawgs will close out their weekend with a scrimmage Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday at noon, both at Dudy Noble Field.
