Gordon Grand Slam Lifts Maroon In First Fall Scrimmage
October 14, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – In the first of 19 fall scrimmages to be played at Dudy Noble Field, the Maroon squad topped Gray 6-3 behind a first-inning grand slam from sophomore Cole Gordon on Friday afternoon.
Â
The Tampa, Florida, native went 1-for-2 and drove in four of six runs for the Maroon-clad Diamond Dawgs. Sophomores Luke Alexander and Elih Marrero drove in the other two runs.
Â
Gray's first score came on a sacrifice fly in the second inning from senior Josh Lovelady, who drew the start behind the plate after an injury-shortened 2016 season. In the top half of the fifth, Gray closed the gap with a pair of runs as junior Tanner Poole scored on a passed ball and a sac fly by freshman Reed Smith that scored classmate Denver McQuary to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Â
Maroon plated a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth as 2016 SEC Freshman of the Year Jake Mangum found home on an Alexander groundout followed by a sac fly from Marrero that drove in sophomore Hunter Stovall.
Â
Sophomore Konnor Pilkington pitched 2.0 innings in which he allowed one run on just two hits and struck out a game-high four batters.
Â
The Diamond Dawgs will return to Dudy Noble Field tomorrow for their second fall scrimmage, first pitch is slated for noon.
