Gray Rides 12-Hit Day To 7-2 Win
October 16, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – A balanced offensive attack and solid pitching helped propel Gray past Maroon, 7-2, in the third scrimmage of the fall baseball season for Mississippi State.
Â
In just five-innings, Gray tallied a dozen hits compared to just two for Maroon, led by sophomore Hunter Stovall, who finished 3-for-4 on the day with two runs scored and one RBI.
Â
Stovall opened the game with a leadoff double to right followed by an RBI single from junior Ryan Gridley that drove him in. Junior Brent Rooker plated Gridley with a double to deep left-center and an RBI-single by redshirt freshman Brant Blaylock drove in Rooker to give Gray a first-inning lead that it would not relinquish.
Â
Gray tallied another run in the second after freshman Hagan Severance was hit by a pitch and stole second before being driven in by Stovall's second hit of the afternoon. The Gray-clad Bulldogs tacked on two more runs in the fourth with Severance finding home via fielder's choice and sophomore Cole Gordon driving in Stovall with a single to put the score at 6-0.
Â
Maroon ended the shutout bid with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth as sophomore Luke Alexander scored on a wild pitch after reaching base on a double to left-center. Redshirt freshman Tanner Poole found home on a Jake Mangum groundout to put the score at 6-2.
Gray added one for good measure in the top of the fifth as freshman Dustin Skelton came across with help from Severance.
Redshirt freshman Trysten Barlow drew his first start of the fall season, tossing a pair of one-hit, shutout innings for Gray. Senior Blake Smith pitched the final inning of the contest for Gray, striking out the side.
The two sides will continue their fall scrimmage schedule on Wednesday at Dudy Noble Field. The start time will be announced on social media.
