Four-Run Fifth Helps Gray To Tie
November 04, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVLLE, Miss. -Â Balanced offense and pitching from both sides resulted in Mississippi State's 12th fall baseball scrimmage ending in a tie at Dudy Noble Field.
Sophomore Konnor Pilkington continued his hot pitching thus far in the fall, providing Maroon with a four-inning, one-hit start.
In the bottom of the third, Maroon got on the board first with a two-run homer to left field by freshman Hagan Severance that also plated senior Josh Lovelady.
Maroon stretched its lead out to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth with a triple by redshirt freshman Brant Blaylock that scored redshirt junior Tanner Poole. Sophomore Elih Marrero then hit an opposite-field single to left to score Blaylock to put the score at 4-0 Maroon.
Gray looked to spark a rally in the top of the fifth, working the bases loaded with one out to allow sophomore Jake Mangum to drive in fellow sophomore Hunter Stovall with a sac fly to center. Sophomore Luke Alexander then hit a double to drive in junior Hayden Marze and freshman Reed Smith. Alexander then stole third and found home on a throwing error by the catcher to tie it up at four runs apiece.
MSU will close out its three-scrimmage week on Sunday with first pitch set for 11:30 a.m. from Dudy Noble. Admission is free to all fall scrimmages.
