MSU Track Bounces Back with 21 Personal Bests in Clemson, Nashville
February 10, 2018 | Track & Field
CLEMSON, S.C./NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Head coach Steve Dudley's message to his athletes last night was to turn up the effort, and the Mississippi State track and field program responded on Saturday with a combined 15 personal bests and 16 Top 10 finishes.
"I told them this morning, I'd noticed some lack of attention to detail and that they didn't seem to be competing with heart," Dudley said. "And I told them if they got the right attitude back, they'd be able to accomplish what didn't seem possible."
The Bulldogs began to turn the corner in the first running event in Clemson. Charlotte Cayton-Smith took fifth in the 800m, while Alon Lewis followed in 10th with a personal-best of 2:10.69. The 800m success continued for the men as Dejon Devroe took second and Kenya Small finished ninth.
MSU's women would pick up two more Top 10's in the Tiger Paw Invitational's field events. Logan Boss finished third in the high jump, while Tiffany Flynn took sixth in the triple jump. Alexis Farley just missed the Top 10, finishing 11th with a season-best leap of 12.59m (41-3.75).
Bulldogs set new 19 new personal-bests at the Music City Challenge in Nashville. Alyssa Staubach trimmed her 800m time. Katherine Badham shaved nearly four seconds off her mile, and Alex Wallace finished more than 2.5 seconds faster in the 3000m.
Distance runners Rhianwedd Price-Weimer and Antonia Hehr finished second and third respectively in their events. Stephen Jones took sixth in the men's 3000m, and Aaron Phelps finished fifth in the mile while moving into third in school-history at 4:07.52. All four men's milers set new personal bests.
Shayla Broughton broke her personal-best in the 60m hurdles twice, advancing to the finals where she finished in 8.42 seconds for sixth place.
