Juston Waters led off the fifth-fastest men's 4x400m relay in MSU indoor history.
Bulldog Track Vaults Into School Record Book at Alex Wilson Invitational
February 17, 2018 | Track & Field
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Three relay teams traveled to this weekend's Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame, and all three turned in times that rank inside the Top Five in Mississippi State indoor school history.
Â
Twelve men's teams in the distance medley relay were faster than the quickest time in the nation entering the weekend.
Â
"Today was a very successful day for us on the track," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "We brought just a small group up here, and they came with determination and a will to compete. That effort showed in our times. This is a good, positive step ahead of the SEC Championships."
Â
The day's successes started in the distance medley relay. MSU's women finished the event in 11:12.51, good for third in the Bulldog's indoor record book. Charlotte Cayton-Smith opened the race in the 1200m, followed by Keturah Smith in the 400m leg. Alon Lewis took the baton for the 800m, and Rhianwedd Price-Weimer brought the Bulldogs home in the final mile.
Â
Dejon Devroe led off the men's distance medley and was followed by Stephan James. Marco Arop ran the 800m, an event in which he holds MSU's freshman record, and Aaron Phelps brought the Bulldogs across the line. The quartet finished in 9:34.44, good for the second-fastest time in Bulldog history and 11th in the NCAA this year.
Â
Tiffany Flynn was the only female competitor in a combined triple jump where she put up a season-best mark of 13.26m (43-6.0). Her leap was second in MSU history only to her own school record, set at last year's Southeastern Conference Championships.
Â
Arop and James were back on the track for the men's 4x400m relay. Juston Waters led off, and Rasheed Tatham ran the anchor leg. The Bulldogs finished second with a time of 3:07.33. The men ran the fifth-fastest time in school history and now rank 14th in the nation this season.
Â
Mississippi State will compete at the SEC Championships next week on Feb. 24-25. Texas A&M will host the conference championships before the Bulldogs return to College Station for NCAA Indoor Championships in early March.
