Maroon, Gray End Sunday Scrimmage In A Tie
November 06, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. -Â In the 13th fall scrimmage and the first under newly-hired skipper Andy Cannizaro, Gray fought back in the ninth to force a 3-3 tie with Maroon at Dudy Noble Field.
Solid pitching from both Mississippi State sides meant that runs came at a premium for much of the 9 1/2-inning affair.
Maroon struck first in the bottom of the fourth, with junior Brent Rooker finding home on an RBI single by sophomore Luke Alexander.
Gray tied it up in the top of the sixth on a solo homer to right field by sophomore Jake Mangum.
The 1-1 tie was broken in the bottom of the sixth on a sac fly to center by Alexander that drove in Rooker to give Maroon the 2-1 lead through six.
Maroon picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single to right-center by senior Cody Brown that drove home fellow senior Josh Lovelady from second.
It appeared as if Maroon was going to put the contest away in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases with one out, but redshirt freshman Trysten Barlow got out of the jam with a double play.
Gray was not about to go down without a fight in the ninth. Redshirt freshman Brant Blaylock led the inning off with a double to left, followed by an RBI double by junior Ryan Gridley to plate Blaylock. Junior Hayden Marze then drove in Gridley with a single to tie it up at 3-3.
Both starters were able to keep opposing hitters in check, with sophomore Keegan James tossing 4.0 shutout innings in which he struck out 3 and allowed just 2 hits for Maroon. Fellow sophomore Ryan Cyr drew the starting nod for Gray, pitching 3.0 two-hit, shutout innings.
MSU will return to the field on Wednesday with the start time still to be determined. Admission is free to all fall scrimmages and first pitch times will be announced on social media.
