Three RBIs by Reynolds Lift Gray To 5-3 Victory Versus Maroon
October 18, 2015 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Junior infielder Luke Reynolds drove in three runs on a pair of doubles to lead Gray to a 5-3 win against Maroon in Game 4 of the Bulldog World Series Sunday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field. The seven-inning exhibition marked Mississippi State's 19th scrimmage of the fall.
Reynolds finished 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs, while teammate Jack Kruger went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. In the cleanup spot, redshirt junior Cody Brown tallied one hit, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI.
Gray starting pitcher Austin Sexton was nearly flawless in the win, striking out a fall-high six batters in three shutout innings. The junior righty allowed two hits and zero walks. Freshman right-hander Ryan Cyr relieved Sexton and also threw three scoreless stanzas, before southpaw Andrew Mahoney notched the save despite allowing three runs (two earned) in the seventh.
Freshman right hander Keegan James suffered the loss for Maroon with four runs allowed on three hits and two walks in one inning of work. Maroon starter Vance Tatum earned a no decision with zero runs allowed in two innings. Righty Jacob Billingsley made his fall debut for Maroon with two strikeouts in a scoreless inning of relief.
Following a pitchers' duel between Sexton and Tatum to open the game, Gray broke it up with a four-run third inning. Transfer Jacob Barfield drew a leadoff walk and was forced out at second when sophomore Ryan Gridley reached on a fielder's choice. Gridley went to second on a balk and was joined on the bases when junior Jacob Robson walked. Gridley then scored on a Kruger RBI single, while Brown drove in Robson with a single through the four hole. With Kruger and Brown on base, Reynolds cranked out a two-RBI double to make it 4-0 in favor of the home team.
Gray added one more run in the fifth when Reynolds drove in Brown on his second double of the game.
Maroon tried to fight back in the final frame, scoring three runs on a wild pitch and a two-RBI single by infielder Matt Spruill.
