Hudson Dominant In First Outing Of The Fall
September 19, 2015 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Junior right-handed pitcher Dakota Hudson turned in three innings of one-run ball Friday, leading Maroon to a narrow 4-3 victory against Gray in Mississippi State's second intrasquad scrimmage of the fall. The six-inning exhibition took place at Dudy Noble Field.
In front of 15 Major League Baseball scouts, Hudson, fanned three batters and gave up zero walks, touching 96 mph on the radar gun. Earlier in the day Friday, Perfect Game named the Dunlap, Tennessee, native the eighth-best pro prospect from this past summer's Cape Cod Baseball League.
Opposing Hudson in a starting role for Gray was southpaw Daniel Brown, who struck out four in three innings of one-run ball. Also recording scoreless outings were junior righty Zac Houston (2 K in 1 2/3 IP) and redshirt freshman lefty Andrew Mahoney (2 1/3 IP).
Sophomore slugger Brent Rooker had the only multiple-hit outing of the day, going 2 for 3 with two runs, an RBI and a double for Gray. Maroon's Cody Brown scored two runs off a single and a walk, while teammate Reid Humphreys reached base in all three plate appearances.
Cody Brown scored the first run of the scrimmage in the bottom of the first thanks to a throwing error by the Gray shortstop. Following a sacrifice fly by newcomer Jack Kruger in the second to tie the game, Cody gave Maroon the lead for good in the fourth when he scored on a sacrifice fly.
In the same inning, Humphreys gave Maroon its third run of the game on an RBI single by catcher Josh Lovelady, before infielder Matt Spruill scored the fourth run on a Gray throwing error.
Gray fought back in the last inning with Rooker and infielder Luke Reynolds scoring runs, but it was not enough.
