October 09, 2015 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Gray defeated Maroon by a score of 6-3 in Mississippi State's 13th scrimmage of the fall. The six-ining exhibition at Dudy Noble Field began Friday and finished Saturday due to a lengthy rain delay.
Playing against Maroon, Gray put a four spot on the scoreboard in the top of the first thanks to a pair of defensive miscues as well as RBI singles from freshman first baseman Cole Gordon and junior infielder Luke Reynolds.
The visitors added one more run in the second when an RBI double from newcomer Jack Kruger plated freshman infielder Delvin Zinn.
Maroon chipped away at the lead after that, scoring one run in the third on an RBI double by junior transfer Nathaniel Lowe. Junior transfer Tanner Poole made it a 5-2 game in the fourth thanks to a ground ball which scored freshman Elih Marrero.
Maroon inched closer to tying the game in the fifth thanks to four straight singles. The fourth one, which Marrero hit to right, scored Lowe and made it a 5-3 game. Following two outs, senior Matt Spruill was hit by a pitch to put the tying run on base. With freshman Brant Blaylock representing the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs, play as called due to rain.
The game concluded Saturday, with Gray scoring the final run thanks to an error.
Lowe was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate for Maroon with an RBI and a pair of doubles. Leading the way for Gray offensively was Kruger, who was 2 for 2 with an RBI double and a run scored.
On the mound, freshman right-hander Noah Hughes kept Maroon in the game with 3 1/3 hitless innings in relief.
