Mike Smith Continues Hot Streak In 11-3 Blowout
October 01, 2015 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Maroon exploded for a nine-run second inning on its way to an 11-3 blowout of Gray Wednesday evening in Mississippi State's ninth scrimmage of the fall. The five-inning exhibition took place at Dudy Noble Field.
Reigning Offensive Player of the Week Mike Smith finished 2 for 2 in the leadoff spot for Maroon, recording two RBIs, two runs, a double and a walk. Freshman infielder Hunter Stovall tallied the only three-hit performance of the night, totaling a run, RBI and a double. Also collecting multiple hits for Maroon were freshman catcher Elih Marrero (2 for 3, run, RBI) and freshman outfielder Brant Blaylock (2 for 3, 2 RBIs, 2 runs, double).
Freshman left-hander Kale Breaux picked up the victory in the start for Maroon, tossing three scoreless innings. The Louisiana native struck out three and allowed four hits and one walk.
Following a scoreless first by Breaux, his offense sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the second, plating nine on 10 hits and a pair of sacrifice flies. At one point in the inning, Maroon reeled off eight straight hits. With the offensive output, junior transfer Nathaniel Lowe became the first Bulldog this fall to score twice in the same frame.
Leading 9-0 in the third, Blaylock scored the 10th run for Maroon thanks to a bases-loaded walk drawn by redshirt junior outfielder Cody Brown.
Gray finally put a pair of runs on the scoreboard in the fourth thanks to an RBI double by freshman infielder Luke Alexander and an RBI groundout courtesy of fellow freshman infielder Delvin Zinn.
Maroon tacked on one final run in the fifth when Smith tapped the dish on a groundout by junior outfielder Reid Humphreys, who finished with two RBIs on the night.
The final run of the game was scored in the bottom of the fifth when junior infielder Luke Reynolds scored for Gray on a throwing error.
