Young Bats Shine As Maroon Takes Scrimmage Number Six
September 26, 2015 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Youth shined for Mississippi State as freshmen Luke Alexander and Cole Gordon each launched their first home runs of the fall in Maroon's 6-2 victory against Gray at Dudy Noble Field Friday. The exhibition lasted six innings.
Junior college transfer Jacob Barfield kicked off the scoring for the Maroon and White's sixth scrimmage of the fall with a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing Junior first baseman Nathaniel Lowe home from third in the top of the second inning to give Maroon a 1-0 lead.
After Delvin Zinn reached first base on an error in the top of the third, senior catcher Josh Lovelady laced a triple down the right field line to push another run across. Junior outfielder Tanner Poole then brought Lovelady home with a sacrifice fly to right to cap the inning, stretching the Maroon lead to 3-0.
Gray responded with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back two-out doubles from freshman outfielder Jake Mangum and senior outfielder Michael Smith.
Freshman infielder Luke Alexander took advantage of a pair of two-out walks by crushing his first home run of the fall to right field, extending Maroon's lead 6-1. He finished the night 1 for 2 with three RBIs.
Junior right-handers Dakota Hudson and Blake Smith led the way for Maroon on the mound, combining to toss six innings while only allowing two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts.
Redshirt freshman first baseman Cole Gordon tacked on a run for Gray with a solo shot to right in the bottom of the fourth inning to cap the game's scoring at 6-2.
