STARKVILLE – Multiple school-best marks fell on Saturday, as Mississippi State completed day two of the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays at the Mike Sanders Track Complex.
School records fell in both the women's javelin and women's pole vault, while the women's javelin also has a new freshman record-holder after MSU's first meet of the 2019 outdoor season. The Bulldogs tallied a staggering 25 top-five finishes on the day, totaling 45 for the two-day event.
"I'm very pleased with how our athletes performed this weekend in front of our home crowd," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "Each meet is going to be more competitive than the last one, so we have to continue to put ourselves in position to attain our team goals. We must continue to get better each week on both the men's and women's sides if we want to reach those goals."
The day started off strong for MSU's men's and women's javelin corps, as all five competitors finished in the top three of their events. On the women's side, Sarah Blake and Caroline Standley impressed in their MSU debuts, with Blake breaking the school record on her first attempt with a throw of 45.07m (147-10.0) to place second. Standley placed third, launching the implement 43.98m (144-3.0) to set the MSU freshman record.
MSU's men put on a spectacular show, with Anderson Peters, Curtis Thompson and Tyriq Horsford taking the top three spots. Peters kicked off his NCAA javelin title defense by uncorking a throw of 82.64m (271-1.0) on his first attempt. Only one athlete in the world, and nobody in the NCAA, had thrown farther entering the weekend.
Curtis Thompson and Tyriq Horsford placed second and third, with tosses of 75.81m (248-9.0) and 68.38m (224-4.0), respectively. Thompson's best mark came on his first throw, while Horsford's came on his fourth attempt in his Bulldog debut.
In the women's pole vault, Peyton Mickelson cleared 3.95m (12-11.5) to place first and break the MSU outdoor pole vault record after breaking the indoor record nearly two months ago. Fellow freshman Emma Hunt tied for second with a mark of 3.65m (11-11.75).
The javelin was not the only event in which the Bulldogs went 1-2-3, as Charles Brockman III (51.23), Rasheed Tatham (51.52) and Malcum Tatum (51.98) placed first, second and third for the Maroon and White in the men's 400m hurdles.
In the women's 400m hurdles, Riley White placed first with a time of 1:01.93. Faith Gilbert ran 11.86 in the women's 100m to place second, while Karson Kowalchuk notched a first-place finish in the men's 100m.
Lester Miller, Terryon Conwell, Kowalchuk and Lawrence Crawford teamed up in the men's 4x100m relay to place second with a time of 39.91.
State's women's 4x800m relay team of Olivia Knox, Mia Meydrich, Emma Tucker and Alon Lewis moved into the MSU outdoor record books, running 9:07.20 to move into fifth in outdoor program history. Slater Richardson, Quintin Reiser, Giacomo DeLuca and Freddie Jackson III placed second in the men's 4x800m relay, clocking a time of 7:45.13.
Alicia Viveros captured a third-place finish in the women's shot put, throwing 14.36m (47-1.5), while Asia Poe and Zaria Tillman earned top-5 finishes in the women's long jump.
MSU ended the meet on a high note, taking both the men's and women's 4x400m relays. Shayla Felder, White, Charlotte Cayton-Smith and Lewis won the women's race with a time of 3:45.11 before Tatham, Cameron Crump, Okheme Moore and Conwell ran 3:10.88 to take the title. Earlier in the day, Conwell placed third in the men's 200m with a sprint of 21.19 while Moore ran 21.22 to place fourth.
The Bulldogs will be back in action next week in a split meet, with some athletes trekking to Austin, Texas, for the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays while others will compete in the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, North Carolina.
"If we are going to be successful this year, it will be because we fell in love with the process in March and April," Woods said. "I'm excited about what the rest of the season has in store moving into Texas Relays and Raleigh Relays next weekend. If we're going to achieve our team goals nationally, we must qualify as many athletes for the NCAA East Prelims, and next week is going to be another opportunity for us to do that."
