Strong Finish Lifts Maroon To Shutout Victory
October 26, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - In a midweek pitching matchup of two junior college transfers, the pair of new Diamond Dawgs stole the show early, but the ability to string together hits allowed Maroon to collect a 4-0 victory Wednesday at Dudy Noble Field.
Trey Jolly got the start for Gray, while Jacob Barton started for Maroon as each junior tossed 2.0 innings for Mississippi State. Jolly struck out four and allowed one hit and walked a batter, while Barton struck out one and was perfect on the mound.
In the bottom of the fourth, Maroon got the bats going with back-to-back doubles from freshmen Dustin Skelton and Hagan Severance which helped put their side ahead 1-0.
Redshirt sophomore Cole Gordon added to their cause in the fifth with a two-run home run down the right field line to extend the Maroon lead to 3-0. Skelton returned to the plate again in the fifth and drove in redshirt freshman Brant Blaylock to push the score to its final count of 4-0.
An altered schedule for Homecoming Week will bring the Diamond Dawgs back out on the field Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch at Dudy Noble.
