AZUSA, Calif. – Alon Lewis closed Mississippi State's time at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a personal best to place fifth in the 800m on Friday afternoon.
Running in the fastest heat of the day, Lewis clocked in at 2:05.54, improving on her No. 4 time in school history. She ranks fourth in the SEC and would be tied for 22nd nationally entering the weekend.
A heat that featured two professionals went out quickly, but Lewis stayed calm and ran her own race. She steadily moved up through the middle of the race before closing strongly to break her personal best by more than half a second.
The winner of Lewis' heat, Avi'Tal Wilson-Perteete of UNLV, went on to win the event with a new NCAA-leading time of 2:02.41.
Charlotte Cayton-Smith finished just two-tenths of a second from her personal best in the event. The sophomore from Cornwall, England, placed 19th, crossing the line in 2:07.91.
Lewis and Cayton-Smith are scheduled to run the 800m again on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. CT at the Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, California. Daniel Nixon and Dejon Devroe will run the men's 800m immediately following.
The rest of the Bulldogs will compete in the LSU Alumni Gold in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Saturday's action begins at 9 a.m. with the women's discus races. "B" sections of the running events will take place in the morning with the men's 4x100m relay at 2:10 p.m. marking the shift to "A" sections for the last half of the day.
