BATON ROUGE, La./TORRANCE, Calif. – Mississippi State's track and field program posted 10 season bests over two meets on Saturday along with 13 top-five finishes.
State ran four athletes in the 800m at the Mt. SAC Relays in California where Charlotte Cayton-Smith broke her personal best with a run of 2:05.96 to place fifth and move into fifth in MSU history. Alon Lewis was right on her heels in sixth at 2:06.25. It was the women's second race in as many days, simulating the prelims and finals setup that awaits them at the conference meet.
Dejon Devroe and Daniel Nixon also ran the 800m in California, finishing in fourth and ninth, respectively.
MSU's throwers picked up three season bests, including two personal bests, at the LSU Alumni Gold where the majority of the team was competing. Jeremiah Pierce threw the discus 43.88m (144-8.75) to break his lifetime best in the event and place eighth.
Alicia Viveros improved her No. 4 mark in MSU history in the shot put, heaving the implement 14.81m (48-7.25) to place fourth. That marked a 39-centimeter improvement over last week's effort. Madelyn Lee also recorded a season best in the shot with a throw of 13.37m (43-10.5).
"We had some good individual performances over the course of the weekend," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "But we've got to get refocused and have a good week next week to build confidence heading into the conference meet."
The Bulldogs' men's 4x400m relay team of Okheme Moore, Cameron Crump, Rasheed Tatham and Charles Brockman III ran a season-best 3:10.70 to place third. State's men came just shy of a season best in the 4x100m relay where Karson Kowalchuk, Crump, Moore and Lester Miller ran 39.96 to finish fourth.
Three MSU men ran personal bests in the 1500m on Saturday. Benjamin Craw running his first race at that distance this season, crossed the line in 4:03.54 to place ninth in the "B" section. Slater Richardson, running his first career 1500m, clocked in at 4:01.52.
In the "A" section, Quintin Reiser and Giacomo DeLuca finished seventh and eighth, respectively, while both breaking their previous bests. Reiser ran 3:55.38, and DeLuca finished in 3:55.82.
Tiffany Flynn ran a season-best 13.37w in the "A" section of the 100m hurdles, coming in just two-hundredths of a second off her personal best.
The Bulldogs will head to two meets next weekend. One squad will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas, site of the SEC Championships, for the National Relays. The second group of MSU athletes will compete at the Southern Miss Open in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
