TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Marco Arop led a trio of record-setting 800m runners on Friday, and Mississippi State set 11 new personal-bests to close the Crimson Tide Invitational on a high note.
Returning to the track for his first action since a runner-up finish in the 800m at the NCAA Indoor Championships, Arop broke the meet and facility records while running the second-fastest time in the world in the 800m, crossing the line in 1:45.50. He was just 0.25 seconds off his personal-best in his first meet of the season.
On his heels were Daniel Nixon and Dejon Devroe who both moved into the top five in MSU outdoor history in the event with second and third place finishes. Nixon's time of 1:47.06 ranks fourth in school history, and Devroe's 1:47.50 is fifth all-time.
The Bulldog trio ran what would be the Nos. 1, 2 and 5 times in the country entering the weekend.
"I'm really proud of how we ran the 800m today," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "This was definitely our best meet up to this point in our season. I'm proud of how our kids competed even in what were some tough conditions at times.
"We're trending upwards and need to keep that momentum going forward in the next several weeks," Woods continued. "We have a big weekend coming up with split meets where we're looking to post even more national-caliber marks."
In the women's high jump, Logan Boss returned to form, clearing a season-best 1.83m (6-0.0) which would rank fifth nationally, entering the weekend. Emma Hunt improved on her No. 4 pole vault in school history with a vault of 3.72m (12-2.5) to place fifth.
Riley White took nearly two seconds off her 400m hurdles time to place second in the event. White finished in 58.96 which ranks third in MSU history and would be fifth in the SEC entering the weekend.
MSU continued its national dominance in the javelin, placing first and second in the men's event. Curtis Thompson won with a throw of 73.45m (240-11), and Tyriq Horsford broke 70m for the first time, throwing 70.95m (232-9) to finish second. On the women's side, Sarah Blake broke her own school record with a mark of 48.02m (157-6) and finished seventh.
