FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Five Mississippi State runners advanced to the finals of the 800m on Friday at the 2019 SEC Indoor Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
Three men qualified for Saturday's final, including Canadian indoor record-holder Marco Arop, Dejon Devroe and Daniel Nixon, while Charlotte Cayton-Smith and Alon Lewis qualified on the women's side. Arop finished third in the prelims, with Devroe and Nixon placing sixth and seventh. Lewis ran a personal-best 2:07.30 in a fifth-place finish, while Cayton-Smith qualified with a run of 2:08.47.
"We had some big hits and a few misses on both sides today," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "Qualifying three men to the 800m finals sets the men up for a big push at our 25-point goal for each team. Having both Charlotte and Alon make the finals of the 800m is also a major plus for the women's team. We still have several events tomorrow in which we can put some points on the board and make a run at reaching our goal of 25 points."
Zaria Tillman got the Bulldogs off to a solid start in the pentathlon, recording personal bests in four of the five events (60m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 800m) en route to a personal-best 3,847 points and fifth-place finish. Tillman's total gave the MSU women four early points and marked the fourth-best pentathlon performance in program history.
"Zaria coming in fifth and scoring four points were huge for our women," Woods said. "We've got another full day of competition in front of us tomorrow, and we need to come out with positive energy and no fear."
In addition to Tillman and Lewis, six other Bulldogs recorded personal bests in their events on Friday.
Faith Gilbert cracked the top five in the indoor 200m in program history, tying for fourth with a dash of 24.23. In the men's 800m, Freddie Jackson III posted a personal-best 1:53.72.
In the men's long jump, Gralyn Jones jumped a personal-best 7.18m (23-6.75) while Cameron Crump leaped a personal-best 7.00m (22-11.75).
In the women's shot put, Alicia Viveros threw the implement a personal-best 14.88m (48-10.0), breaking her previous mark for the third time this year. Reggie Miller posted a personal-best mark of 2.16m (7-1.0) in the men's high jump.
Next Up For MSU …
Action will resume at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, with Asia Poe starting things off for MSU in the women's high jump at 1:15 p.m. CT. A portion of Saturday's events will be streamed live on SEC Network+ starting at 2:55 p.m.
The SEC Championships are the final chance for the Bulldogs to earn qualifying marks for the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships, held March 8-9 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama.
