FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – In a star-studded field in the men's 800m final at the 2019 SEC Indoor Championships, Mississippi State sophomore Marco Arop did not disappoint, taking silver in the event on Saturday at the Tyson Track Center.
Arop ran 1:47.86 to lead three Bulldogs in the top five in the race, just 0.4 seconds behind Texas A&M's Devin Dixon, who is the top 800m runner in the NCAA. Dejon Devroe and Daniel Nixon placed fourth and fifth, respectively, to give State's men 17 points. In the women's 800m final, Charlotte Cayton-Smith ran a personal-best 2:06.30 in a fourth-place finish as part of 14 personal bests set over the weekend.
"I'm very proud of how our kids competed and I thought we did a bunch of great things this weekend that give us a lot of confidence moving forward," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "We had several athletes set personal bests and season bests over the past two days, and that gives us something to build on going into outdoor season. While outdoor season is next on the agenda for our teams, the future looks bright for us indoors as well."
In addition to Cayton-Smith's fourth-place finish in the women's 800m final, Alon Lewis earned a point for State's women with an eighth-place finish.
Of the 14 personal bests set on the weekend, five occurred on Saturday starting with freshman Asia Poe, who cleared a personal-best 1.72m (5-7.75) in the women's high jump. Poe's mark moves her into a tie for fifth all-time at MSU in the indoor high jump.
Alexis Farley jumped a personal-best 12.92m (42-4.75) in the women's triple jump, a mark that moved her into second in MSU indoor history in the event.
A pair of Bulldogs ran personal bests in the 3000m, with Sylvia Russell turning in a time of 9:50.83 to lead MSU in the women's race with a 16th-place finish while Lake Spradling ran 8:28.90 to lead the MSU men.
In the men's 4x400m relay, the tandem of Cameron Crump, Terryon Conwell, Marco Arop and Okheme Moore posted a time of 3:09.93 to finish fifth, a mark that was the best by an MSU relay team this season.
