April 15, 2018 | Men's Golf
WEST POINT, Miss. – Hoping to stay hot, the Mississippi State men's golf team will begin its final regular season event at home Monday as it hosts the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship.
The two-day competition starts with two rounds on Monday at the Par 72, 7,000-yard Old Waverly Golf Club, followed by a final round on Tuesday.
State will look to build off of three-straight Top 5 finishes, including a season-best second place at the Bighorn Invitational two weeks before.
"This is a special week for our program," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "Old Waverly Golf Club is a huge part of our program and we are so grateful to be able to host a great event on our home course. We are looking forward to competing in front of our home crowd this week."
Sophomore Peng Pichaikool, senior Taylor Grant and sophomore Garrett Johnson have played in all of MSU's events in 2017-18 and are in Smith's lineup for the tenth time this season. Senior Taylor Bibbs and freshman Cameron Clarke fill out the lineup, the same one that cruised to the third-best 54-hole finish in program history at the Bighorn Invitational in March.
All five of State's golfers finished in the Top 25 at the Bighorn Invite.
Grant has three-straight Top 10 finishes and three-straight tournaments with an eagle going into the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship. He shot a career-best 65 in his last round at the Bighorn Invite.
Six more of the Golf Dawgs will get a chance to hit the links at Old Waverly as Juniors Ross Bell and Austin Rose, senior Jacob Ross, redshirt freshman Griffin Agent and freshmen Hunter Hammett and Austin Fulton will all play as individuals.
Seniors Taylor Grant, Taylor Bibbs and Jacob Ross will all be playing their final regular season tournaments in maroon and white.
The Bulldogs will host 14 opposing teams at Old Waverly. The field includes Chattanooga, Coastal Carolina, Lipscomb, Little Rock, Louisiana, Louisiana Monroe, LSU, Louisiana Tech, McNeese, Memphis, Ole Miss, Southern Miss, South Alabama and South Florida.
Monday's opening round begins with an 8:30 a.m. CT shotgun start, teeing off a day of 36-hole continuous play. State will tee off from the first five holes.
Admission to the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship is free for all guests.
Live scoring will be available all tournament long via Golfstat.

"This is a special week for our program. Old Waverly Golf Club is a huge part of our program and we are so grateful to be able to host a great event on our home course. We are looking forward to competing in front of our home crowd this week. We have to make sure we have the right mindset this week. This is our next step and nothing more. It's important that we block out all the external factors that go into playing a tournament on your home course. We need to play for each other and do the simple things well this week. I am excited to watch us compete."
