March 06, 2018 | Men's Golf
AUBURN, Ala. – After three days at the RTJ Grand National Lake Course in Auburn, Ala., Mississippi State tied for third Tuesday at the Tiger Invitational, tying its season-best finish.
MSU previously established its best finish in September at the Bearcat Invitational.
"Today was a total team effort," MSU head men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "The guys showed a lot of resiliency and toughness this week."
State was led by Senior Taylor Grant all tournament. Grant shot 7-under to finish in a tie for fourth, and shot 2-under in the final round.
Grant got off to a hot start in the Tiger Invitational Sunday, sinking a hole-in-one in the first round.
"I can't say enough about Taylor Grant this week," Smith said. "He put the team on his back when we needed it."
"I thought we all played well and fought hard until the end," Grant said. "It was nice to see some good scores on the leaderboard and we can use this tournament to continue to get better for the rest of the year."
Sophomores Peng Pichaikool and Garrett Johnson finished behind Grant on State's scorecard, shooting a 218 and 221, respectively.
Freshman Cameron Clarke shot 8-over for the week, while junior Ross Bell shot 3-under Tuesday to help the Bulldog cause. His 225 for the tournament put him in a tie for 62nd to conclude the week.
Host Auburn shot 25-under at the Tiger Invitational and took the team title, while Maryland's David Kocher finished atop the team leaderboard with a 205.
After competing in three tournaments in as many weeks, the Bulldogs will have a 10-day break before their next tournament on March 15 at the Schenkel, hosted by Georgia Southern at Forest Heights Golf Course in Statesboro, Ga.

MSU head coach Dusty Smith:
"Today was a total team effort. This was the first time this season that we were in the final pairing of a golf tournament. Anytime you put yourself in that position, you learn and grow from it regardless of the result. The guys showed a lot of resiliency and toughness this week. Being tough and resilient has to be part of who we are, it has to be in our DNA. We have a week to prepare for our next step. As always, how we prepare will correlate to how we compete next week."
"I can't say enough about Taylor Grant this week. He put the team on his back when we needed it. Ross Bell responded with a huge final round for us. He did a great job of being a team player this week."
Senior Taylor Grant:
"I thought we all played well and fought hard until the end. It was nice to see some good scores on the leaderboard and we can use this tournament to continue to get better for the rest of the year. We are ready for our next step in our journey!"
