March 16, 2018 | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Ga. – In his first competitive round since October, senior Taylor Bibbs shot a 4-under 68 Friday to guide Mississippi State into third after the opening round of the Schenkel Invitational.
Fellow senior Taylor Grant continued his recent success and shot a 69 at Forest Heights Country Club, as MSU shot 3-under as a team. Grant finished tied for seventh and Bibbs tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard.
"I thought we played a solid round of golf today," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "Our Seniors carried us today and played two big rounds for our team. Everyone was battling all day, and we were able to finish our round off strong."
"I did a little bit of everything today," Bibbs said. "I drove it really well which set up some easy wedges, and I was able to capitalize. Hopefully we can continue our momentum into tomorrow and improve on today."
Sophomore Peng Pichaikool and freshman Cameron Clarke both shot 2-over for the day, while sophomore Garrett Johnson finished with a 75.
Pichaikool ended his day with an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole to contribute to the team score.
Vanderbilt's Theo Humphrey shot a 66 to grace the top of the leaderboard, while his team is also in front after a 14-under day.
State is scheduled to tee off the second round of the Schenkel at 9:30 a.m. CT Saturday behind the 8:00 a.m. tee time for the first group. Live stats will be available all day via Golfstat.

MSU head men's golf coach Dusty Smith:
"I thought we played a solid round of golf today. Our Seniors carried us today and played two big rounds for our team. Everyone was battling all day and we were able to finish our round off strong. We need to be sharp with the little things tomorrow. There were times in today's round where we got a little careless. We need to make sure we continue to have the right mindset and focus in order for us to be successful. I am looking forward to watching this group compete tomorrow."
