Freshmen Lead the Way as Bulldogs Win 13 Events to Conclude Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays
March 24, 2018 | Track & Field
STARKVILLE, Miss. – With numerous former Bulldogs in attendance before the program's alumni night, Mississippi State track and field claimed 13 event wins on the final day of the Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays.
While 19 Bulldogs set new collegiate bests on Saturday afternoon, the team boasted at least one athlete in the Top 10 of every event MSU competed in. In all, MSU athletes set 34 new collegiate bests over the weekend.
"We came out and competed well in front of our home fans and the alumni," head coach Steve Dudley said. "It was good to get outside and get the new season started, but we have room for a lot of improvement and faster times."
MSU won the 4x100m and 4x800m on the men's side, while the women took the 4x800m and the 4x200m crowns.
Freshmen shone to open the year. Charles Brockman III pushed teammate Rasheed Tatham all the way to the line in the 400m hurdles where he finished second to the fellow Bulldog. Malcum Tatum took third in that event. Katherine Badham, running her first career steeplechase, was the top collegiate finisher with a time of 10:58.21.
The youth movement continued in the sprints where walk-on freshman Faith Gilbert was the Bulldogs' top finisher in the 100m where she placed fifth. Terryon Conwell won the event on the men's side.
