Golf Dawgs Take Hot Streak To Sunny California
March 22, 2018 | Men's Golf
PALM DESERT, Calif. – Following consecutive Top 5 finishes, the Mississippi State men's golf team heads west for its furthest and final road trip, an almost 1,600-mile trek to the Bighorn Invitational, hosted by Kansas State.
The two-day competition begins with two rounds Friday at the Par-72, 7,000-yard Bighorn Canyons Course, and concludes with Saturday's lone final round.
"We are looking forward to this next step in our process," head coach Dusty Smith said. "It's nice to go out to California to get out of our comfort zone a little bit. Anytime you get to play on different types of grasses in a different climate, you have the opportunity to learn and grow as a player and competitor."
The same lineup that took fourth at the Schenkel Invitational in State's last time out will represent MSU this weekend in California. Sophomore Peng Pichaikool will lead the team out, followed by senior Taylor Grant, who finished tied for fifth, his second straight Top 5 finish.
Sophomore Garrett Johnson is third on Dusty Smith's lineup card. Pichaikool, Grant and Johnson have competed in all eight of State's tournaments this season.
Senior Taylor Bibbs, who also finished in the Top 10 at the Schenkel, and Cameron Clarke fill out Smith's lineup card.
The 12-team field is comprised of BYU, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska, Notre Dame, San Diego State, South Alabama, Washington State and host Kansas State.
Friday's opening round will begin with an 10 a.m. CT shotgun start, and live stats and results will be available through Golfstat.
The Bighorn Invitational is MSU's final event before hosting the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship April 16-17 in West Point, Miss.
MSU Men's Golf Coach Dusty Smith:
"We are looking forward to this next step in our process. It's nice to go out to California to get out of our comfort zone a little bit. Anytime you get to play on different types of grasses in a different climate, you have the opportunity to learn and grow as a player and competitor. We need to have a great mindset this weekend. We need to play our brand of golf and focus on us. Nothing is guaranteed in our sport. You have to go out and earn it."
