March 23, 2018 | Men's Golf
PALM DESERT, Calif. – Mississippi State men's golf will look to secure its third consecutive Top Five finish Saturday after it collected two excellent rounds Friday to open the weekend at the Bighorn Invitational.
The Bulldogs finished their day alone for second after shooting 16-under-par.
"I am really pleased with how we played today," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "We had all five players competing hard and in the round all day. Taylor Bibbs and Garrett Johnson were solid all day and Cameron Clarke played a big round for the team this morning."
The second place Bulldogs were led by Taylor Bibbs, who is tied for atop the leaderboard at the Bighorn Golf Club Canyons Course. This weekend's tournament is a homecoming for the senior from San Diego, Calif.
"It was good to get back to the golf I grew up playing," Bibbs said, "It felt like the old days and I even had my dad out to watch. I just felt very comfortable out there."
Bibbs started his day with a season-best 67 in the opening round. He shot a 70 to conclude the day 7-under with a share of first place.
Sophomore Garrett Johnson contributed to the cause with a 5-under day, collecting a 71 and 69 in Friday's two rounds. Johnson also sunk an eagle in the second round on hole No. 3.
Freshman Cameron Clarke also collected a season-best round with his 69 in the first. His eagle on No. 16 in round two allowed him to close out his day tied for 14th and 3-under.
Senior Taylor Grant and sophomore Peng Pichaikool helped better the MSU score with low rounds of their own, shooting even and 1-over, respectively.
States sits four strokes away from the leader, Illinois, while Bibbs shares a tie for the top of the player leaderboard with Illini golfer Michael Feagles.
Saturday's final round is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. CT, while the Bulldogs tee time is set for 10:54. Live stats and results will be available on Golfstat.
