STARKVILLE, Miss. - In the 10th Mississippi State baseball scrimmage of the fall, Maroon dominated Gray in all aspects of the game, winning 7-0 behind both balanced offense and pitching.
Sophomore Hunter Stovall was the highlight of the afternoon, driving in three of Maroon's seven runs at Dudy Noble Field.
To open up the contest, Gray worked the bases loaded, but was unable to cross home as Maroon starter Keegan James ended the threat.
Maroon got things started in the bottom of the first with a run scored by 2016 SEC Freshman of the Year Jake Mangum, who singled to lead off the inning. He found home on a groundout by Stovall to give Maroon the early 1-0 advantage.
Maroon's lead catapulted to 7-0 with a six-run bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single by Stovall that drove in senior Josh Lovelady and freshman Hagan Severance. The inning included four singles, a hit batsman and a walk.
Sophomore Keegan James drew the starting nod for Maroon, pitching 3.0 shutout innings in which he allowed just two hits while striking out three. Fellow sophomore Ryan Cyr started on the bump for Gray. In 3.0 innings, the Leawood, Kansas, native struck out three batters and allowed one unearned run on just two hits.
