Balanced Offense Carries Gray In Saturday Scrimmage
October 29, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - In a fall scrimmage on Homecoming Saturday, Gray defeated Maroon, 7-4 in front of the largest crowd of the fall slate behind a pair of doubles from sophomore Cole Gordon.
Both starting pitchers were effective in keeping their respective opponents off the board for most of the contest, with both teams finding their stride on offense as the game progressed.
Maroon found its way onto the board first in the bottom of the third inning, with freshman Hagan Severance hitting a ball to the gap in left-center field for a double that drove in sophomore Elih Marrero.
Gray responded in the top of the fourth with a two-run double to the gap in right-center field by sophomore junior college transfer Elijah MacNamee that drove in Gordon and freshman Dustin Skelton. MacNamee was then driven in on a groundout to second by junior Hayden Marze to put Gray ahead 3-1.
Maroon tied things up in the bottom half of the fourth with a sac fly by Marrero to drive in junior Hunter Vansau, followed by an RBI single by senior Josh Lovelady that scored junior Ryan Gridley.
Gray picked up another run in the fifth off of a double to left field by Gordon that drove in junior Brent Rooker, who also reached on a double to left, to help Gray reclaim the lead that it would not relinquish.
In the top of the seventh, Gray picked up a pair of insurance runs off the bat of Gordon, who belted his second double of the game, driving in Rooker and redshirt freshman Tanner Poole. Gordon then found home on a throwing error by the catcher after reaching third on a wild pitch.
Marrero hit a double to start off the seventh for Maroon, but the rally was ended by junior Andrew Hahoney, who closed out the contest.
Sophomore Konnor Pilkington continued his solid pitching performance this fall with 3.0 one-hit, shutout innings in which he struck out three batters and walked just one in a start for Maroon.
Redshirt freshman Parker Ford was also effective for Gray, also striking out three batters in 2.1 innings pitched. He allowed Maroon's first run of the contest on a pair of hits.
The two sides will return to Dudy Noble Field on Sunday for an 11:30 a.m. CT first pitch and as for all fall scrimmages, admission is free.
