October 18, 2015 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Junior right-handed pitcher Dakota Hudson set the tone early as Maroon dominated Gray by a score of 8-2 in Game 3 of the Bulldog World Series to sweep the annual fall classic. The seven-inning exhibition took place Saturday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field and marked MSU's 18th fall scrimmage.
After winning both Game 1 and 2 in the final inning, Maroon controlled the game from the start thanks to 3 2/3 innings of shutout baseball from Hudson. The righty recorded the win with a fall-high six strikeouts, allowing zero walks and two hits. Freshman lefty Kale Breaux surrendered two runs on a two-out double in 2 1/3 innings following Hudson, before transfer Blake Smith picked up the save with two strikeouts in a scoreless seventh.
Gray starter Daniel Brown took the loss with three runs (one earned) allowed in four innings.
Offensively, all 10 Maroon batters reached base Saturday, with nine of them combining for 11 hits. Freshman shortstop Luke Alexander (2 for 4, two runs, RBI) and redshirt freshman first baseman Cole Gordon ( 2 for 3, RBI) led the way with multiple hits.
The victors scored in the first inning when Alexander scored on a two-out double to the gap in left by Gordon.
True freshman Delvin Zinn (1 for 2), who scored the winning run in Game 1 and knocked in the winning run in Game 2, scored in the third on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0 in favor of Maroon.
The home team made it 3-0 in the fourth when true freshman catcher Elih Marrero doubled, advanced to third on an error and scored on a ground out.
Maroon doubled its lead in the fifth thanks to a passed ball, a dropped fly ball in left field and an RBI single from redshirt sophomore Brent Rooker.
The two teams traded a pair of runs in the sixth thanks to a two-out RBI double from Gray freshman infielder Hunter Stovall and RBIs from Maroon outfielder Jake Mangum (1 for 3, 2 RBIs, run) and Alexander.
