April 16, 2022 | Baseball
State won the series, 2-1, over the Tigers with wins in the first two games
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State (21-16, 6-9 SEC) dropped the third game of the series to No. 14 Auburn (24-12, 8-7 SEC) by a score of 3-2 Saturday night (April 16) at Dudy Noble Field. Despite dropping the final game, State won the series, 2-1, over the Tigers. The series finale did not start until two hours after the original start time due to a weather delay.
The Diamond Dawgs got off to another early lead with solo homers in the second inning by Hunter Hines and Kellum Clark, but went cold as State was held scoreless after that. The Bulldogs were able to hold their lead until the top of the seventh when Auburn would tie the game at two before taking a one-run lead in the eighth.
In the ninth, Hunter Hines walked to lead off the inning before Matt Corder entered as a pinch runner. Corder reached second on a sacrifice bunt by Aaron Downs. Two batters later, Brad Cumbest singled through the left side and Corder was thrown out at home plate for the final out of the game. The play eventually was under an official review before being upheld.
Cade Smith put on a strong outing with six innings pitched, five strikeouts and only four hits allowed in a scoreless effort. Fristoe came on in relief to start the seventh and allowed three runs – two earned – on two hits in 1.1 innings. After Fristoe came in to relieve Smith, Pico Kohn made effective work with his appearance as he totaled four strikeouts through 1.2 innings pitched and only allowing two base hits.
Offensively, State was led by Kellum Clark and Brad Cumbest who each went 2-for-4 in the contest. In addition to solo home runs by Hines and Clark, three other Diamond Dawgs record base knocks, including Kamren James, Logan Tanner and Von Seibert.
