FAYETTEVILLE, Ark./HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Practice winning. That's been interim head coach Chris Woods' message to the Mississippi State track and field program all season. On Saturday, MSU combined for 19 top-10 finishes at the final two meets of the regular season.
The morning started with the National Relays hosted by Arkansas in tough winds that made the back stretch especially challenging. Despite running in just two of the scored relays on both the men's and women's sides, both teams finished eighth overall ahead of nationally ranked Stanford and Washington programs.
"I think we definitely had some positive things happen considering the conditions," Woods said. "I'm not dissatisfied, but those conditions we faced today in Arkansas could very well be the same conditions we compete in when we come back up here in two weeks. We have to be able to handle the environment and still compete at the highest level. We have to take that energy and put it towards scoring points at the SEC Championships."
Alicia Viveros moved up the all-time Bulldog leaderboard in the shot put with a personal-best 15.09m (49-6.25) throw to place third. She recorded personal bests in both of her events this weekend. The Bulldogs also made the podium in the men's 4x100m relay, finishing third, and were fifth in the women's 4x800m relay.
"Lester [Miller] ran really well [on the 4x100m relay today]," Woods added. "I'm really happy for him because he hasn't run a full season in two years. [Yesterday] was his second 100m race in two years, and he ran 10.34 to qualify for first rounds."
Chandler Underwood highlighted a strong day for distance runners at the Southern Miss Open. Underwood finished second in the men's 3000m while running the No. 4 time in MSU history at 8:35.35. He was followed by Luke Zacharias and JT Mackay in third and fourth.
All three Bulldogs in the men's 1500m ran personal bests, with Giacomo DeLuca finishing third in 3:54.07. Sylvia Russell won the women's event in 4:30.98.
Tiffany Flynn won the women's 100m hurdles, and Alex Woodberry posted a personal best in the event, crossing the line in a wind-aided 14.85.
In the field events, Madelyn Lee recorded her second personal best of the weekend with a 44.91m (147-4) throw in the discus to finish third. Chardae Tryon threw a season-best 36.41m (119-5). Reggie Miller placed fourth in the men's high jump.
