BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – An exciting men's 4x400m relay capped off a solid season opener for the Mississippi State track and field team at the 2019 UAB Blazer Invitational
The Bulldogs captured second and third in the final event of the day, concluding a day that saw nine personal bests achieved and eight top-three finishes.
"I thought we did a lot of good things today, but I also saw areas in which we can improve," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "I liked that several of our athletes set personal bests and finished in the top three of their respective events. Overall, it was a pretty good day and I'm proud of how we competed the entire day. This was a great stepping stone and I'm exciting to see how we grow and improve tomorrow."
In addition to the 4x400m relay, State's relay squads shone in the distance medley relay, starting with the women's team of Charlotte Cayton-Smith, Olivia Knox, Alon Lewis and Shannon Fair, which finished second with a run of 12:05.39. On the men's side, Kenya Small, Marco Arop, Daniel Nixon and John Dalton Rohr also finished second, running 10:11.59.
In the women's shot put, sophomore Alicia Viveros posted a personal-best mark, hurling the implement 14.17m (46-6.0) on her third throw of the day. Later, Viveros threw the weight 13.22m (43-4.50). Madelyn Lee would also record personal bests in both events, hurling the shot 13.16m (43-2.25) and recording a throw of 15.71m (51-6.5) in the weight throw.
Riley White got her indoor season off to a thrilling start, taking the women's 500m in 1:16.39, a personal-best time for the sophomore.
In her MSU indoor debut, Faith Gilbert reached the women's 60m final through qualifying, running 7.55 in prelims and 7.70 in the finals to finish seventh.
Gralyn Jones placed third in the men's long jump with a personal-best 7.09m (23-3.25). In the women's triple jump, Alexis Farley notched a third-place finish with a jump of 12.20m (40-0.50). Also finishing third in their respective events were Karson Kowalchuk in the 60m and Malcum Tatum in the 600m.

The Bulldogs will be back in action in Birmingham Saturday at the Vulcan Invitational, starting with the men's shot put at 9 a.m. CT.
