STARKVILLE – With the turn of a new year comes the start of the indoor season for Mississippi State track and field, as the Bulldogs open up the year with two one-day meets in nearby Birmingham, Alabama.
MSU opens up the weekend Friday at the Blazer Invitational and concludes Saturday at the Vulcan Invitational. Both meets are hosted by UAB and will be held at the Birmingham CrossPlex, the site of the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships (March 8-9).
"For a lot of our athletes, this meet is going to about knocking out the cobwebs," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "Some will be going in off-events and off-distances to help gain a little confidence. I'm looking for each person to execute his or her event and for them to have the best season opener they've ever had. If we do those things, it sets us up for success the rest of the season."
Nearly 50 Bulldogs will compete across the two days. Friday's Blazer Invitational begins at 9 a.m. CT with the men's shot put, in which freshman Jeremiah Pierce will make his debut. The meet will conclude with the 4x400m relay, which is set for a 6:30 p.m. start.
Pierce will open up Saturday's Vulcan Invitational in the same event, set to begin at 9 a.m. CT. The Bulldogs will close out the day at 5:30 p.m. with the 3000m Invite.
At the Blazer Invitational, MSU is one of five Southeastern Conference teams in attendance, while three SEC foes await the Bulldogs on Saturday.
On the men's side, two teams in attendance on Friday are ranked in the USTFCCCA TFRI top-25, as Georgia and Alabama field the fifth and seventh-ranked squads in the nation. Saturday's field features three ranked teams represented in Alabama, Georgia and No. 17 LSU.
Four top-25 teams will be in attendance on the women's side, led by eighth-ranked Georgia. Alabama (13th), Tennessee (17th) and Miami (25th) round out the ranked teams in the Blazer Invitational. No. 7 LSU is set to participate in Saturday's events, along with Alabama, Georgia and Miami.
