STARKVILLE – Set to hit the ground running on another exciting season, the Mississippi State cross country team will not have to travel far for its first meet of the year. The Bulldogs are headed to Memphis, Tennessee, on Saturday for the Brooks Memphis Twilight XC Classic.
The meet will be held at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex and hosted by Christian Brothers University, with State running the women's 5K at 9:20 p.m. CT.
On Monday, the Bulldogs were predicted to finish fourth in the Southeastern Conference preseason coaches' poll while being ranked fifth in the USTFCCCA South Region preseason poll. State was the third SEC squad in the preseason regional rankings, behind Georgia and Auburn at Nos. 1 and 3, respectively.
"We're excited about another great season, and it's going to be good to get back to Memphis to kick off the year," head coach Houston Franks said. "We've run this meet several times in the past, and we look forward to it every time it's on our schedule."
The Bulldogs are sending eight runners to compete in the event that features 20 teams, including SEC foes Ole Miss and Missouri.
Although some of MSU's most seasoned veterans will not be competing this weekend, the Bulldogs are still taking an experienced lineup to Memphis. Veterans include Katherine Badham, Charlotte Cayton-Smith, Alon Lewis, Carly Terp, Emma Tucker and Alex Wallace.
In addition, a pair of newcomers from Hoover, Alabama, will make their MSU debuts on Saturday in Sydney Steely and Ava Weems.
"This will be a good test for us," Franks said. "There are some solid teams in the field this year, but I like that we will be tested early. I'm excited to get some of our younger athletes out there to see what they can do and give them an early opportunity to succeed in a meet, as some of our veterans won't be opening up until the second meet."
Next Up For MSU …
After competing in Memphis, the Bulldogs will return to action Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Montevallo Falcon Classic in Montevallo, Alabama.
