Cross Country Finishes Fourth At Memphis Twilight

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – On a warm, muggy Saturday night, the Mississippi State cross country team got off to a solid start to the 2018 campaign.
The Bulldogs finished fourth in the women's 5K at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. State was one of three Southeastern Conference teams in the event, with Missouri finishing first and Ole Miss finishing behind the Bulldogs at fifth.
"I am extremely proud of how we ran tonight," head coach Houston Franks said. "We saw some great things today out of every one of our runners. I thought our fight was absolutely terrific."
State was led by sophomore Katherine Badham, who finished 21st overall with a personal-best mark of 18:53.19 that shattered her previous best mark by 42 seconds. Badham was one of five Bulldogs who set career-best marks in the 5K, including freshmen Sydney Steely and Ava Weems.
The two newcomers ushered in a strong start to their Bulldog careers, with Steely finishing two spots behind Badham at 23rd with a time of 18:56.22. Weems was not far behind, finishing 36th at 19:16.02. Also setting personal-bests were Alex Wallace (19:04.11) and Charlotte Cayton-Smith (19:19.41), who finished 26th and 39th, respectively.
All seven Bulldogs who raced earned top-50 finishes, rounded out by Carly Terp and Emma Tucker at 42nd and 43rd.
MSU cross country/track and field alumna Ffion Price won the race by a staggering 22 seconds.
"Everyone in our group should walk with their heads held high," Franks said. "If we race and practice like that every single day, good things are going to happen."

The Bulldogs will return to action Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Montevallo Falcon Classic in Montevallo, Alabama.
