Bulldogs Collect Records, Hardware on Final Day of Penn Relays
April 28, 2018 | Track & Field
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Mississippi State had a taste of the Penn Relays podium on Friday, but on Saturday the Bulldogs were back for more.
For the first time in school history, MSU claimed two Championships of America and won a third relay wheel for their biggest hardware haul ever in a single year at the Penn Relays.
Daniel Nixon, Kenya Small, Dejon Devroe and Marco Arop shattered the MSU school record in the 4x800m relay to earn the Bulldog's second Championship of America at the relays. Knocking more than six seconds off the 11-year record, MSU clocked the fastest time in the world this season at 7:14.16.
"This was a huge, historic weekend for us," head coach Steve Dudley said. "We said our goal coming here was to win wheels, and to take more back than we ever have before along with three new marks in our school's Top 5 is a really big deal. It's good for our kids to have this kind of opportunity and come up with big performances."
Devroe split 1:46.00, just 0.10 seconds off the Top 10 800m splits in Penn Relays history. That would be the No. 2 time in the NCAA in the open 800m. Arop finished in 1:46.85, faster than his MSU freshman record of 1:47.62 in the open.
"We have been looking forward to this for a while," Small said. "Indiana got us a couple times this year, so we were really looking to show ourselves. It's an added bonus to win the whole thing."
The nation's top javelin program once again produced an event winner, extending MSU's streak of a javelin win to all six meets of the year. Nico Quijera slipped by teammate Anderson Peters on his final throw. Quijera's mark of 73.80m (242-1) took first, while Peters placed second with a throw of 72.51m (237-10).
On the track, Rhianwedd Price-Weimer ran in the Olympic Development mile where she placed sixth but was the top collegiate finisher. Freshman Faith Gilbert finished eighth in the 100m, running 11.96.
To close the meet, MSU placed third in the 4x400m relay. Vince Castillo, Juston Waters, Rasheed Tatham and Stephan James led in the first half of the final leg but were passed by Houston and Auburn in the last turn. The quartet posted a season-best 3:04.61.
