KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Mississippi State will open competition at the SEC Championships on Friday in Knoxville, Tenn. The Bulldogs won the men's team outdoor championship in 1962 and have claimed a combined 119 individual conference titles between the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Despite a down year last season, the Bulldogs claimed three individual titles in 2016. Brandon McBride took the 800m, while Marta Freitas and Erica Bougard won the 1500m and heptathlon, respectively.
"We're excited about SEC's," head coach Steve Dudley said. "We're looking forward to competing there as a team and also getting our already nationally-qualified athletes even more solidly qualified. We'll be prepared for NCAA championships which is obviously our ultimate goal, as a team and as individuals."
Seven athletes on the men's side are currently in the Top 10 in the conference, including the Nos. 1 and 3 javelin throwers in the NCAA this season. Anderson Peters and Nicolas Quijera will be looking to snap Texas A&M's Ioannis Kyriazis' three-year championship streak. Kyriazis has yet to record a mark this season.
Eight Bulldog women are ranked in the Top 10 entering the championships, including the NCAA leader and 2015 NCAA champion in the 1500m Rhianwedd Price-Weimer. MSU's heptathletes may be poised for big performances this weekend. When the Bulldogs were in last in Knoxville, Shayla Broughton set personal-bests in three of the seven events along with a new career-best score at the Tennessee Relays.
The SEC boasts more Top 25 teams than any conference in the nation. Eighteen of the league's 27 men's and women's teams are in the latest USTFCCCA rankings. Eleven of those are in the Top 10. The Bulldog men sit at No. 20 and are the eighth-highest team in the league.
The women's hammer, men's javelin and both 10,000m races will be decided on Friday night. The heptathlon, women's shot put, both long jumps and the men's steeplechase will be contested on Saturday. The remaining event championships will be awarded on Sunday. Most running events will feature preliminary rounds on the first two days of competition.
Friday and Saturday's action will be broadcast on SEC Network+. Coverage begins at 10 a.m. CT on Friday and 9:15 a.m. on Saturday. Championship Sunday will air live on SEC Network beginning at 5 p.m. Additional Sunday coverage is available on SEC Network+ beginning at 1:30 p.m.
