Peters' mark broke the SEC Conference Championships meet record.
MSU Men in Second, Women in Fifth After First Day of SEC Championships
May 11, 2018 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Mississippi State opened the SEC Championships with two podium finishes on its first day in Knoxville, Tenn. With four scorers, MSU's two teams posted the second-highest combined total of all schools, trailing only Alabama.
Anderson Peters threw the javelin 82.04m (269-2) to break the previous SEC Championships meet record and improve on his NCAA-leading mark. Peters victory broke Texas A&M's Ioannis Kyriazis' three-year championship streak.
"We competed against each other in the 2017 World Championships, so now the score is one all," Peters said. "The conditions were really good for javelin throwing. I was struggling a bit, wasn't able to control the power that I was using at the moment. I tried to put it together for one throw, and that result was 82m."
Kyriazis finished second, sandwiched between Peters and the Bulldogs' Nicolas Quijera. Quijera, the 2018 SEC Men's Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year threw the implement 79.05m (246-4). Together, Peters and Quijera scored 16 points for MSU in the event to put their team in second after the first day.
"It's beautiful to watch," head coach Steve Dudley said. "Watch someone throw it nearly 300 feet. That sucker is humming. It's beautiful, especially coming to watch them come off our athletes."
On the women's side, Brianna Smith placed fifth to score four points in the hammer throw. She launched the implement 59.63m (195-7). Shannon Fair capped the night with a fifth-place finish and four points in the 10,000m.
Shayla Broughton ended the day in sixth-place in the overall heptathlon standings after breaking her personal bests in the 100m hurdles and shot put. Zaria Tillman was in eighth to close the day.
In preliminary round action, three of MSU's four entries in the men's 400m hurdles advanced to Sunday's finals. Charles Brockman III and Malcum Tatum each broke personal bests, and Rasheed Tatham also qualified. The three all ran within 0.06 seconds of each other.
"We had a few question marks in the hurdles group," Dudley said. "We knew they could run times that quick, but we hadn't seen them the past few weeks while the rest of the league was getting faster. It's good to see them getting back to running well now when it matters the most."
Marco Arop turned in the second-fastest qualifying time in the men's 800m, and Alon Lewis qualified in sixth on the women's side.
