
State Set For SEC Championship

ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Mississippi State will look to prove itself against the rest of the Southeastern Conference as it at begins SEC Championship play Wednesday.
All 14 teams will play three rounds, one each day through Friday, at the Par-70, 6,898-yard Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course, before a cut to eight teams. Two rounds of elimination match play will follow on Saturday, and the tournament will conclude with Sunday's championship match play.
"Championship season is a great time of year," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "It's the players' time to go out and compete for each other. We need to have the right mindset and keep focusing on things we can control."
For the 11th time in as many tournaments this season, the Bulldogs will be led by sophomore Peng Pichaikool and Garrett Johnson and senior Taylor Grant. Senior Taylor Bibbs and freshman Cameron Clarke fill out the back end of Smith's lineup card.
This marks the fourth-straight tournament these five Bulldogs have comprised the MSU lineup, as the group has contributed to State's four-consecutive Top 5 finishes.
Johnson had the best finish at State's final regular season as he tied for fifth at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, while MSU took fourth in its home event. Johnson shot a 68 in the final round of the event and had a streak of 29-straight holes without a bogey between the three rounds.
Pichaikool finished tied for seventh at the end of the 2017 SEC Championship after shooting a 4-under 206.
The Golf Dawgs will look to improve on a strong first regular season under Smith, who has them in 63rd in Golfweek's team rankings.
MSU's last SEC title came when the Bulldogs captured consecutive victories in 1997 and 1998.
Tee times for Wednesday's opening round begin at 11:35 a.m. CT, and State will be in one of the first groups teeing off. Clarke, Bibbs and Grant will start from No. 1, Johnson and Pichaikool from No. 10.
Live scoring will be available all-tournament long via Golfstat. Live coverage of Saturday's two rounds will be on SEC Network+, and Sunday's Championship round will be carried on SEC Network.
