STARKVILLE – Going into the track portion of Mississippi State track and field's preseason intrasquad meet Saturday, the Maroon team needed some big performances on the track if it wanted to take home the trophy.
It did just that, picking up big points in the women's 60m hurdles and 60m, men's 1000m and women's 300m to edge the Gray team 108-96. The White team finished with 85 points on the weekend.
"First, congratulations to the Maroon team for pulling out the win today," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "I am so pleased with how everyone competed this weekend. This weekend was about practicing winning, and I liked our championship mentality in this event. I can't wait to get our indoor season started and to see us keep up the momentum from this weekend. I want to thank all of those who traveled from near and far to come out and watch us compete today. I also want to thank all of our support staff for all of their hard work in helping make this event such a tremendous success."
The meet used a 5-3-2-1 scoring format, with the relays being scored 5-3-1. Teams could not score more than twice in a single event. For example, if Maroon took first, second and third, the fourth-place athlete would be bumped up to third for scoring purposes and collect two points.
Tiffany Flynn led the charge for Maroon on Saturday, tallying 10 total points by winning both the 60m and 60m hurdles. She finished the weekend with 18 points. In addition to Flynn's victories, the Maroon squad posted triumphs in the women's 10-mile road race, men's 60m, women's and men's 1000m, women's 600m, women's 300m and the women's distance medley relay.
Gray's production was split among several athletes, with Katherine Badham, Charles Brockman III, Caden Foos and Daniel Nixon each notching 5 points. The Gray team also closed out the day by winning the men's distance medley relay.
White was led by 5 points each from Cameron Crump and JT Mackay. Crump won the men's 300m while Mackay opened up the day with a victory in the men's 10-mile road race. The White squad also won the final event of the day, capturing the mixed 4x400m relay crown.
