January 18, 2018 | Track & Field
STARKVILLE, Miss. – After setting two meet records in Birmingham last week, the Mississippi State track and field program turns north to Nashville for the Vanderbilt Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
The Bulldogs will meet five other SEC schools in the 22-team field including, Alabama, Auburn, Missouri, Ole Miss and host Vanderbilt.
Mississippi State's women are ranked No. 1 in the nation and will compete alongside No. 8 Ole Miss and No. 20 Alabama. On the men's side, Alabama is ranked ninth nationally.
"We got our feet wet last week and saw everything we needed to work on to get better," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "I know everyone is ready to get back on the track and get better."
The Bulldogs will participate in three field events and one running event on Friday, with the field events kicking off at 4 p.m. CT and the 200m starting at 7 p.m. Both the men and women will compete in the high jump and long jump, while the Bulldog women will compete in the weight throw.
Saturday features the majority of the running events, starting at 10 a.m. The remainder of the field events will begin at 10:30, but Bulldog field athletes will not be in action until 11 a.m. when the women's shot put kicks off. There will be a break in competition from 12:15-1 p.m. before the sprint events begin. The afternoon will also feature the men's and women's triple jump, the women's seeded mile and the seeded 3K.
Two Bulldogs began their weekends on Thursday afternoon in Birmingham at the Samford Multi. Shayla Broughton and Zaria Tillman both competed in the women's pentathlon. Broughton finished fourth (3,317), and Tillman came in ninth (2,828) after not recording a height in the high jump. Both women finished as high as second in an event. Broughton took second in the 60m hurdles (8.80), while Tillman was the runner-up in the long jump (5.66m, 18-7.0).
