Field Athletes Lead the Way for MSU on Day One of the Vanderbilt Invitational
January 19, 2018 | Track & Field
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Day 1 of the Vanderbilt Invitational ended with Mississippi State claiming seven Top 10 finishes, all in the field events.
The women's weight throw saw multiple records fall. Brianna Smith took fifth place with a school-record mark of 21.05m (69-0.75), which is good for the eighth-longest collegiate mark this season. Smith held the prior school record, thrown in the same facility a year ago.
Two other marks shattered the facility and meet records. Gwendolyn Berry (Nike/NYAC) broke her previous meet and facility record of 24.03m (78-10) with a toss of 24.85m (81-6.50). She was followed by Jeneva Stevens (NYAC) at 24.24m (79-6.5).
The Bulldogs fared well in the high jump as Logan Boss won the event on the women's side, clearing 1.80m (5-10.75) and tying her own eighth-best mark in the country this year. On the men's side, Reggie Miller and DeVantre Young came in third and fifth, respectively, each with a height of 2.05m (6-8.75).
MSU's success continued in the men's long jump, where Derrick Monroe and Willie-Lionel Reed each finished in the top-five. Monroe finished third (7.40m, 24-3.5) among collegiate athletes, while Reed came in just behind him at 7.35m (24-1.5).
"We competed so hard," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "We made a lot of strides."
The Bulldogs will wrap up competition in Nashville tomorrow with runners on the track at 10 a.m. CT. MSU athletes in the field events will get underway at 11 a.m.
