Dawgs Fall On Sunday In Knoxville
September 24, 2017 | Volleyball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – In its first SEC road match of the year, Mississippi State fell to Tennessee in four sets.
The Dawgs are now 9-8 (0-2 SEC) after falling to Tennessee (8-4, 1-1) (23-25, 26-24, 14-25, 11-25).
"I like the way we played the first two games," third-year coach David McFatrich said. We sided out at a high rate, and put the ball away well in transition. We were doing the things we wanted to during the first two games. In the third and fourth games, we didn't pass the ball, and we and couldn't get everyone involved. They started dedicating on Jelena Vujcin, and we couldn't get other attackers going. Young squad learned some lessons today, I hope. Everyone is ready to get back to practice and get ready on Monday."
There was a lot of play on both sides of the court as each team was no more than four points of the other. MSU did not have control of the lead, but tied up the game four times. Khristian Carr was the standout of the set with 5 kills and 5.0 points. Tennessee won, 25-23.
Set two showed a lot of grit and focus for the Dawgs. In the middle of the set, MSU was down by four and had a 6-0 run to gain control leading 11-9. State then fell behind, but had another 3-0 run to get back in the game. At the end of the set, both teams fought hard as points went back and forth. The Bulldogs won off of an error, 26-24.
Mississippi State struggled with communication during the third set. Various errors gave Tennessee an early advantage, and State had difficulty catching up. Volunteers won, 25-14.
