MSU Falls To In-State Rival Ole Miss In Three
September 27, 2017 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State found it's voice in the third set, but struggled to regain control and lost to Ole Miss in three.
The Bulldogs are now 9-9 (0-3 SEC) after falling to the Rebels 11-5 (2-1 SEC), 12-23, 13-23, 24-26.
"We came out slow, and you can't do that," third-year coach David McFatrich said. "I didn't like our passion or energy in the beginning. I like how we competed in the third game, but you can't decide to show up then. I know we're young, but we have to have more energy and effort."
The Dawgs struggled to get going offensively in the first two sets of the night. In the opener, the Rebels took advantage of a plethora of MSU errors to win, 25-12.
The second set was similar to the first, as MSU struggled offensively. Trailing 23-7, the Dawgs rallied with four points to make the score 23-11. Morgan Kath earned a service ace in the rally. Ultimately, Ole Miss won, 25-13.
MSU came out of the gates with a 3-0 run to start off the third set. From there, it was a back-and-forth rally between the two teams. No more than three points ever separated the two all set. The end was a thriller with numerous, long rallies, but Ole Miss took the set 26-24 to clinch the victory.
"I want to thank the crowd because they stayed until the end, even though their home team was getting beat," McFatrich said. "They stayed and they helped us to almost win that third game. If that happens, who knows because we have all the momentum. Moving forward we have got to learn lessons from today."
On Sunday, Mississippi State welcomes No. 10 Kentucky to Newell-Grissom. The match will be broadcasted on SEC Network + at 2 p.m. CT.
