MSU Men Head to SEC Championship at St. Simons Island
April 20, 2017 | Men's Golf
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Coming off a two and half week break, the Mississippi State men's golf team travels to Sea Island, Georgia, for the 17th time to play in the SEC Championship.
The 2017 edition of this event gains a wrinkle with the addition of match play being added to three rounds of golf (36 holes on Friday). All 14 SEC teams will compete in the stroke play portion on Friday and Saturday at the par-70 Sea Island Golf Club, Seaside Course. On Sunday, the top eight teams will face off in a playoff style match-play event that concludes Monday with the championship round.
"This is one of those weeks that if you don't look forward to playing, then you probably don't have a pulse," MSU coach Clay Homan said. "I feel like we've had some good preparation time leading up to this week, and everyone seems to be ready to go."
MSU's lineup will feature a trio of Bulldogs making their SEC Championship debut in Peng Pichaikool, Jackson Dick and Garrett Johnson. Two veterans in Taylor Grant and Ross Bell fill in the remaining slots on the Bulldog scorecard.
"We will have three guys playing in their first SEC Championship, but they've all played a lot of golf for us this year and have done well, so I don't see that as an issue," Homan said. "With the format change going to 54 holes of stroke play then cutting to eight for match play, I'm confident that will add to the excitement of our championship."
The opening tee times are set for 6:20 a.m. CST Friday morning.
