Volleyball Set For 2016 Maroon & White Scrimmage

STARKVILLE, Miss. – With less than a week until first serve, the Mississippi State volleyball Bulldogs will hold their final tune-up of the 2016 preseason with the Maroon & White Scrimmage on Monday, Aug. 22 at Newell-Grissom.
First serve is set for 7 p.m. CT with free admission for all fans.
"We're very excited to get on the court for this scrimmage and play in front of our fans for the first time with this team," MSU head coach David McFatrich said. "These girls have worked hard every single day since they all got back in July and I know they're as ready as anyone to get on the court and show how much we've improved from last season."
To say McFatrich's first year with the Maroon and White was a successful one is an understatement, as the Bulldogs went 17-15 for the first winning season since 2006. The record stands as the best for any first-year coach in MSU volleyball history.
Even though the Bulldogs lost five seniors from the 2015 squad, they return a wealth of talent, while having also brought in a number of impressive newcomers. Highlighting the returners are seniors Evie Grace Singleton and Jazmyne Johnson. Singleton paced State in kills, aces and points last season, while Johnson was tops for the Bulldogs in blocks.
Also returning are junior Payton Harris, MSU's digs leader last season, and sophomore Blossom Sato, MSU's top setter.
State welcomes standout freshmen Riley Duzenack, Emily Hill and Liv Benner to the 2016 edition of the Bulldogs, while also adding junior transfer Jelena Vujcin. Vujcin comes to Starkville via Seattle, where she earned All-WAC Freshman Team and All-WAC Second Team honors the last two seasons.
The Bulldogs begin the second season of the McFatrich era on Friday, Aug. 26 with the Bulldog Invitational. First serve is at 7 p.m., against the Kansas Jayhawks, who reached the national semifinals last year. State will wrap up their first non-conference tournament of the year against Lamar (12 p.m.) and Eastern Washington (7 p.m.) on Saturday.
MSU will also face off against McNeese State on Sunday at 2 p.m., to close out its opening weekend of play.
"This is the most excited I have been for a season in my time as a coach and it starts off with one of the toughest teams in the nation in Kansas," McFatrich said. "I know these girls are up to the challenge. Our goal ever since we arrived at Mississippi State is to take on the top teams in the country. To open the season at home against the No. 4 team in the nation is something that I am really excited for."
