2016 SEC Freshman of the Year Jake Mangum went 2-for-3 on the day for Maroon with one run scored.
Maroon Outlasts Gray in Pitching Duel, 2-1
October 22, 2016 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. - Both Maroon and Gray benefitted from strong pitching outings in Maroon's 2-1 win on Saturday at Dudy Noble Field.
Â
Maroon used its speed on the base paths to sneak past Gray in the sixth scrimmage of Mississippi State's fall baseball season.
Â
Sophomore Jake Mangum led off the bottom of the first with an infield single to third. He stole second and advanced to third on a ground-out, setting himself up to take home on a passed ball.
Â
With a bases loaded situation the very next inning, sophomore Peyton Plumlee threw a pitch past his catcher, allowing freshman Dustin Skelton to score from third and double the Maroon lead.
Â
Pitching kept both teams relatively quiet through two more innings, but junior Brent Rooker broke the silence in the fifth with a single to left field that scored senior Cody Brown for Gray's lone run of the game.
Â
Sophomore Keegan James got the start for Maroon and stifled Gray, striking out three in two innings. He was relieved by freshman Riley Self, who pitched two more scoreless innings and struck out one.
Â
For Gray, freshman Drew Windham pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief of the starter Plumlee.
Â
Brown shone offensively for Gray in the lead-off spot. His lead-off triple in the first failed to produce any runs, but he later represented Gray's only run in the fifth.
Â
Mangum led Maroon on offense with a pair of lead-off infield singles in the first and fifth innings and the first of Maroon's two runs.
The three-scrimmage weekend comes to a close Sunday at noon from Dudy Noble Field.
