Dogs Rally Past South Florida; Drop Tourney Finale To SEMO
September 11, 2010 | Volleyball
CARBONDALE, Ill. - Mississippi State rallied to erase a 2-1 deficit en route to a five-set win over South Florida (3-4) in the first of their scheduled two Saturday matches in the SIU Saluki Invitational at Southern Illinois. In the nightcap, Southeast Missouri (3-6) handed the Bulldogs a straight-sets setback, giving State a 1-2 mark in the evenly-matched tournament and an 8-2 record overall.
MSU travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles before launching SEC competition Sept. 19 (1 p.m.) at Ole Miss. The Sunday afternoon match will be televised regionally by Cox Sports TV.
State claimed the opening set 25-20, but South Florida thundered back, winning the next two 25-20 and 25-23. The Bulldogs wrestled momentum away from the Bulls with a solid 25-16 set four decision and nailed down the win with a decisive 15-8 win in game five.
SEMO took the opening sets of the nightcap 25-22 and 25-20 and, on their seventh serve at match point, nailed down the third set 30-28.
“It was a good win against a good South Florida team, and shows again what we're capable of,” said MSU head coach Jenny Hazelwood. “We started taking care of the little things again, and I think it might have frustrated South Florida as the match went on. Our players did a good job of not getting down when things weren't going our way early. It was a good total team effort and something we hope to build on.”
After not registering a player in double-digits for kills in Friday's tourney opener, the Bulldogs had three players reach double digits in the win over USF. Junior Caitlin Rance led the way with 14 while both senior middle blocker Ashley Newsome and freshman outside hitter Dani McCree chipped in 10 kills each. It was a season-high for kills for McCree, inserted in the MSU starting lineup for the second time this season.
The Bulldogs had to overcome an impressive 1-2 punch from USF's tandem of J'beria Davis and Allie Boaz. The duo combined for 41 point-scoring swings, 22 by Davis, as South Florida amassed a 62-50 advantage in kills for the match and out-hit State .214 to .193. But USF struggled mightily at the service line, where 16 serves missed their mark. State also held the advantage at the net, out-blocking USF 9-5 in total team blocks. Newsome led the way with five assisted blocked while McCree, Rance, and freshman Chanelle Baker tallied three total blocks each. Rance backed her 14-kill performance with 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the campaign, sharing the team digs lead with senior Kayla Woodard.
State battled from behind and came up just short in dropping a closely-contested 25-23 decision in the third set. But the Bulldogs trailed only twice early in the fourth set and limited USF to nine kills in pulling even with a 25-16 win. Ashley Newsome opened the scoring for State with a quick kill to begin the deciding fifth set and later served up an ace that extended the MSU edge to 7-3 and forced the Bulls to call a timeout. State added to that lead and registered its eighth win of the campaign when USF's 16th service ace ended play at 15-8.
Caitlin Rance paced State with 11 kills against SEMO, with Dani McCree just behind with nine kills. Ashley Newsome, whose five total blocks was tops in the match, was held to a weekend-low six kills and negative hitting for the first time this fall. The Redhawks held a 15-kill edge on the Bulldogs, 47-32, led by Clarie Keaton's 17 kills and a 14-kill performance by Karlee Lursen.
SEMO also dominated on defense, out-digging MSU 73-60. Kayla Woodard tallied 18 digs and Iwa Belisario added 10.
